Program Requirements (30 credits)

A minimum of 30 semester hours past a master’s degree is required to earn the C.A.S. Candidates must complete a minimum of 15 semester hours in professional education coursework at the 500 and/or 600-level at the University of Maine. A master’s degree in the C.A.S. subject matter is required for admission.
 

Prerequisites

  • A master’s degree in a related field (e.g., education, special education, related service)
  • Minimum graduate GPA of 3.25
  • Current Maine licensure as an educator

General Overview of the C.A.S. – Special Education

The Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) degree goes beyond the master’s level and can serve as a good introduction to graduate research in the field of special education.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

For admission to a C.A.S. in Special Education, students must meet basic standards of the Graduate School and special eligibility requirements of the program.

If you currently hold teaching certification/licensure please attach a copy of your certification record with your application. Working with students is a requirement in the special education program, and schools require proof of fingerprint/background check.  Please submit proof of credentials.  Visit the Maine DOE website for more information:  https://www.maine.gov/doe/cert

Applicants may be invited for a personal interview with the Special Education faculty. Students should request financial aid information from the University’s Student Financial Aid Office. Special Education scholarships are sometimes available for candidates with documented financial needs. To be eligible, applicants must have applied for financial aid through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.
