Curriculum

All students must also complete the core curriculum requirements. The complete degree requirements are in the undergraduate catalog.

To obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree:

1a. Students must complete an academic minor or a second academic major outside of their primary discipline. Appropriate minors and majors shall be determined by the academic unit of the student’s primary major to ensure breadth of study.

or

1b. Alternatively, a student may complete, within their program of study, 27 credits in courses meeting the Core Curriculum criteria of the university. At least 12 of these credits must be at the 200 level or higher.

and

2. Students must complete a minimum of 60 credits outside their major. (If a particular major requires courses in another discipline, either within the same department or in another department, those credits may still count toward the 60 credits.) Depending on the particular program, the degree will require 120 or 121 total credits for graduation. In addition, each student must achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.0 over all courses taken. Some programs may also require minimum grade point averages for courses within the major. Students should consult the individual program sections for specific details about a particular major.

The following courses are required (28 credits):

  • ACC 201: Principles of Financial Accounting (3 credits)
  • ACC 202: Principles of Managerial Accounting (3 credits)
  • ECO 117: Issues and Opportunities in Economics (1 credit)
    Not required for internal or external transfers.
  • ECO 120: Principles of Microeconomics (3 credits)
  • ECO 121: Principles of Macroeconomics (3 credits)
  • ECO 220: Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (3 credits)
  • ECO 221: Intermediate Macroeconomics (3 credits)
  • ECO 266: Principles of Economic Data Analysis (3 credits)
  • ECO 489: Capstone Course (3 credits)
  • FIN 350: Business Finance (3 credits)

Choose one of the following courses (3-4 credits):

  • MAT 115: Applied Mathematics for Business and Economics (3 credits)
  • MAT 116: Introductions to Calculus (3 credits)
  • MAT 122: Pre-Calculus (4 credits)
  • MAT 126: Calculus I (4 credits)

Choose one of the following courses (3 credits):

  • STS 132: Principles of Statistical Inference (3 credits)
  • STS 215: Introduction to Statistics for Business and Economics (3 credits)
  • STS 332: Statistics for Engineers (3 credits)
  • STS 434: Probability Theory (3 credits)

A total of fifteen (15) additional credit hours in ECO or FIN courses are required. A minimum of 9 credits must be ECO courses at the 300 level or higher, 3 of which must be ECO courses at the 400 level or higher (not counting the core or capstone).

ECO 385: Econometrics and ECO 480: Introduction to Mathematical Economics are strongly recommended for students considering graduate study in Economics.

There is a strong and growing demand for graduates in financial and managerial occupations at the state, regional, and national levels. Notably, no other institution in Maine currently offers an online undergraduate degree in Financial Economics, making this a distinctive and accessible option within the University of Maine System.

Graduates are well prepared for careers such as financial analyst, financial manager, advisor, or related business and economic roles. They are also positioned for graduate study in economics, finance, business, or law.
