The online B.S. in Rural Education prepares you to make a meaningful impact in smaller communities, providing high-quality education to elementary and secondary students or students with special needs.
Format
The online B.S. in Rural Education is a blended program that offers classes online and in-person field placements. The in-person field placements are completed in a public school setting that is geographically convenient for the student.

Curriculum
All students are required to complete the core requirements (37-40 credits). The complete core requirements are in the undergraduate catalog.
The following courses are required (21 credits):
- EDU 112: Foundations of Education (3 credits)
- EDU 216: The Teaching Process (3 credits)
- EDU 217: Working with Culturally Diverse Students (3 credits)
- EDU 255: Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults (3 credits)
- SED 302: Adapting Instruction for Students with Disabilities (3 credits)
- SED 365: Differentiated Instructional Strategies (3 credits)
- SED 445: Behavioral Support Systems and Strategies (3 credits)
Curriculum Courses
The following courses are required (15 credits):
- EDU 327: Content Area Literacy Methods (3 credits)
- EDU 329: Elementary Social Studies Methods (3 credits)
- EDU 332: Elementary Science Education Methods (3 credits)
- EDU 334: Integrated Reading & Language Arts Methods (3 credits)
- EDU 344: Elementary Math Methods (3 credits)
Field Placement/Student Teaching Course
Field Placement, also known as Student Teaching, is completed in person at a public school in a geographically convenient location for the student. The following course is required (12 credits):
- EDU 460: Student Teaching (12 credits)
Fulfills the Capstone Experience and Service Learning Experience in the Major Core requirement
Minors
Students will choose one of the following minors (18-24 credits):
- Visual Arts: Creative Arts Minor (21 credits)
- Mathematics: Quantitative Methods Minor (20 credits)
- English and Language Arts: English Minor (18 credits) or Graphic Novel Minor (18 credits)
- Life Sciences: Integrative Biology Minor (32 credits) or Marine Biology Minor (24 credits)
- Social Studies: Economics Minor (18 credits), History Minor (18 credits), Psychology Minor (18 credits), or Social Studies Minor (18 credits)
Electives
In addition to completing 37-40 credits of the UMaine at Machias Core Requirements and 66-72 credits of core curriculum, field placement, and minor courses, students will need to take 8-17 elective credits to meet the program’s 120-credit requirement.

Minors and Electives
In addition to completing 37-40 credits of the UMaine at Machias Core Requirements and 33 credits of core curriculum and field placement courses, students will need to take 47–50 additional credits to meet the program’s 120-credit requirement.
Students may choose to earn a minor (18-24 credits) and/or take electives to complete the remaining 47-50 credits.
