The online Minor in Maine Studies explores Maine’s cultural, historical, and physical landscapes. The program benefits those planning to work in Maine – especially teachers, social workers, policymakers, and government employees.

Curriculum

The following courses are required (6 credits):

  • MES 101: Introduction to Maine Studies (3 credits) Fall and Spring
  • MES 201: The Maine Coast (3 credits) Spring and Summer

Choose four courses (12 credits). Course options include, but are not limited to:

  • ANT 426: Native American Folklore (3 credits) Fall
  • ENG 429: Topics in Literature and Language (3 credits) Summer
  • FAS 329: Topics in Franco-American Studies (3 credits) 
  • HTY 210: History of Maine (3 credits) Summer
  • HTY 211: Maine and the Sea (3 credits) Spring
  • HTY 213: History of the Maine Woods (3 credits) Summer (odd years)
  • HTY 222: Maine Indian History in the Twentieth Century (3 credits) Summer
  • MES 498: Advanced Topics in Maine Studies (3 credits) Fall and Spring
  • POS 203: American State and Local Government (3 credits) Summer

Declaring a Minor

To declare a minor, complete the Change of Program form, which can be found on the UMaine Student Records website and the UMaine Portal.

  • NOTE: Minors are available to current degree-seeking undergraduate students at the University of Maine. Minors are not available to students enrolled in a certificate program, and a minor can only be earned with a bachelor’s degree. 

Careers

Students who plan to find a job in Maine in business, government, or social services will benefit from a multidisciplinary understanding of Maine. Education majors who expect to teach in Maine’s public schools will find the Maine Studies programs beneficial in preparing them to teach Maine Studies, a course mandated by the State of Maine through LD291.
