About the Program

The Online Undergraduate Certificate in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence provides a solid foundation in the core competencies of engineering and artificial intelligence. This program equips you with the knowledge and hands-on skills to analyze data, design intelligent systems, and apply modern AI tools to real-world engineering challenges. 

Educational Objectives

  • Gain sufficient knowledge of AI methods for developing engineering applications based on modern AI tools.
  • Develop skills necessary for analyzing and processing data, and designing, implementing, and testing AI methods using available tools such as MATLAB and Python.
  • Establish the suitability and validation of AI methods for engineering applications.

Curriculum

Course assignments will use Python or MATLAB. Students with extensive programming experience in a different language, such as C/C++, Java, JavaScript/Perl/R, or R, should familiarize themselves with Python and MATLAB before their first course.

The following courses are required (6 credits):

  • ECE 490: Neural Networks (3 credits)
    OR COS 470: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (3 credits)
  • ECE 491: Deep Learning (3 credits)

Choose two courses from the following (6 credits):

  • COS 475: Machine Learning (3 credits)
  • ECE 498: Selected Topics in Electrical and Computer Engineering: Cyber Physical Systems (3 credits)
  • ECE 417: Mobile Robotics  (3 credits)
  • MEE 459: Engineering Optimization (3 credits)

Admissions

A maximum of one course, or 3 credits, at the 400-level may be transferred from outside the University of Maine to the program for credit.

  • One college-level course in each of the following areas minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale):
    • Calculus III (MAT 228 or equivalent)
    • Statistics and Probability (STS 132, STS 235, STS 332, STS 434, ECE 316, CHE 350 or equivalent)
    • Engineering-Level Software Programming such as C/C++, MATLAB, or Python (ECE 177, ECE 277, MEE 125, CIE 115, PHY 241, COS 125 or equivalent)

The admission evaluation process begins once we’ve received all of your application materials. When you’re ready to apply, please submit the following:

  • Official academic transcripts from all institutions attended
