About the Program

A collaborative program between the University of Maine, the University of Maine at Farmington, and the University of Southern Maine.

The online Advanced Library and Media Specialist Graduate Certificate empowers teachers, educational leaders, and resource specialists to facilitate and advocate for equitable access to information. Aligning to the current standards for school librarianship by the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Association for School Librarians (AASL), you’ll develop the knowledge and skills to manage school libraries and information services. 

This certificate can be stacked with the Graduate Certificate in Library and Media Specialist to complete the required 24 credits to earn Maine certification in Library and Media Specialist (071). Specific information regarding Maine certification is available through the Maine Department of Education.

Choose two courses from the following (6 credits):

  • LMS 515: Dynamic PK-12 Library Management (3 credits)
  • LMS 516: Reference and Research for Digital Age Teaching, Learning, and Libraries (3 credits)
  • LMS 517: Pk-12 Literature in School Libraries (3 credits)
  • LMS 520: Digital Age Methods  of Teaching in Library and Media Studies (3 credits)
  • LMS 559: School Library Leadership (3 credits)
  • LMS 560: Assessment in Library and Media Studies (3 credits)
  • LMS 580: Summer Technology Institute for Library and Media Studies (3 credits)
  • LMS 598: Library and Media Specialist: Special Topics (3 credits)

We have rolling admissions, meaning you can apply and be accepted anytime. The admission evaluation process begins once we’ve received all of your application materials. Before you apply, please review the application instructions. When you’re ready to apply, please submit the following:

  • An online application
  • Current résumé or CV
  • Official academic transcripts from all institutions attended
  • A 300-500 word essay based on the following prompt

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment of librarians and library media specialists is projected to grow 3% from 2022 to 2032, with about 13,700 openings annually. The median annual wage for librarians and library media specialists was $64,370 in May 2023, higher than the median yearly wage for all occupations of $48,060.
