About the Program

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a model that focuses on research-based methods of prevention and intervention combined with data-based decision-making to improve student behavioral and academic outcomes. The online Graduate Certificate in Positive Behavior Intervention and Support: RTI for Behavior is designed to assist teachers in developing the knowledge and skills to support students with intensive behavioral needs and to provide leadership in implementing changes within their school.

Curriculum

Our curriculum teaches students to use scientifically validated PBIS protocols and procedures to conduct program evaluation and data-based decision-making across three tiers of intervention.

The following courses are required (9 credits):

  • SED 581: Response to Intervention for Behavior: School-wide Prevention (3 credits) 
  • SED 582: Response to Intervention for Behavior: Targeted Intervention (3 credits) 
  • SED 583: Response to Intervention for Behavior: Individualized Interventions (3 credits) 

Admissions

Application Deadline: August 1

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Currently working or volunteering with students with disabilities in an educational setting

Careers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of special education teachers is projected to grow 8% from 2020 to 2030 with about 38,600 openings per year. The median annual wage for special education teachers was $61,500 in May 2020, higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $41,950.
