About the Program

The Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics is designed for students interested in gaining essential analytical skills to make data-driven business decisions by capitalizing on rich data resources. This certificate provides professional-level education in leveraging big data through advanced analytical tools such as data visualization, predictive modeling, and machine learning/artificial intelligence.

This certificate is a stand-alone credential or can be combined with the MaineMBA. Graduate-level courses taken in the certificate may transfer to the MaineMBA, upon admission.

Curriculum

Prior coursework with a grade of B or better in an undergraduate-level statistics course covering topics through linear regression is required. Students without foundation coursework will take one additional online course to fulfill this requirement prior to taking any Business Analytics courses.

Students looking to continue into the MaineMBA may also need foundational courses in:

  • Accounting (financial and managerial)
  • Economics (macro and micro)
  • Finance

Students can complete foundational skills via online foundation courses prior to starting MBA courses.

The following courses are required (6 credits):

  • BUA 680: Foundations of Business Intelligence and Analytics (3 credits)
  • BUA 681: Data Management & Analytics (3 credits)

Students who have completed equivalent course work in the past may substitute this core course with an additional selection from the analytics electives.

Choose three electives (9 credits):

  • BUA 645: Market Research and Analysis (3 credits)
  • BUA 682: Data Pre-Processing for Business Analytics (3 credits)
  • BUA 683: Information Visualization (3 credits)
  • BUA 684: Business Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (3 credits)
  • BUA 685: Problem Solving and Decision Analysis (3 credits)
  • BUA 686: Predictive and Business Forecasting (3 credits)
  • ECO 530: Econometrics (3 credits)
  • ECO 531: Advanced Econometrics and Applications (3 credits)

Admissions

  • An undergraduate degree from an approved accredited college or university
  • Prior coursework with a grade of B or better in an undergraduate-level statistics course covering topics through linear regression is required. Students without foundation coursework will take one additional online course to fulfill this requirement prior to taking any Business Analytics courses.

  • Official transcripts from all other colleges/universities attended
  • Resume or CV
  • Letters of recommendation are NOT required. However, please include the contact information for three professional or academic references on your resume or attach them as an additional document to your application.
  • A writing submission describing your career goals and aspirations to earn your MaineMBA is required. The submission is evaluated not only for content but also for intrinsic writing quality and strengths. The piece is no longer than 500 words total.
  • International students must meet the Graduate School TOEFL require

Careers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of management analysts is projected to grow 14% from 2020 to 2030, faster than average,  with about 124,400 openings per year. The median annual wage for analysts was $93,000 in May 2021, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $41,950.

Graduates can enter into several mid to senior-level positions. Those interested in operating their own business will find this certificate helpful. Potential career and career tracks include:
