About the Program

The online B.A. in Psychology and Community Studies is an interdisciplinary, community-engaged program that explores the cultural heritage and issues affecting communities. You’ll receive a service-oriented education empowering you to understand, manage, and promote change.

Psychology and Community Studies students graduate not only with the knowledge and skills they need to compete in the job market or go on to graduate school, but also with a set of tools they can use to meet and greet many of life’s opportunities and challenges.

Curriculum

The B.A. in Psychology and Community Studies integrates psychology with an interdisciplinary curriculum that draws from anthropology, psychology, sociology, community studies, economics, the natural sciences, the arts, and the humanities.

All students are required to complete the core requirements (37-40 credits). The complete core requirements are in the undergraduate catalog

Required Core Requirements Course
The following course is required in order to fulfill the Capstone Experience, Service Learning, and Writing Intensive in Major requirement (3 credits):

  • SCC 450: Senior Project (3 credits)

The following courses are required (39 credits):

Social Science Research and Analysis Courses
The following courses are required (6 credits):

  • SSC 124: Statistics for the Social Sciences (3 credits)
  • SSC 205: Social Science Research Methods (3 credits)

Foundational Perspectives Courses
The following courses are required (9 Credits):

  • ANT 102: Introduction to Anthropology: Diversity of Cultures (3 credits)
    OR SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology (3 credits)
  • PHI 100: Contemporary Moral Problems (3 credits)
  • PSY 100: General Psychology (3 credits)

Community Engagement Courses
The following courses are required (6 credits):

  • COE 313: Community Experience: Internship & Seminar (3 credits)
  • SSC 450: Senior Project (3 credits)

    Diversity Course
    Choose one of the following courses (3 credits):

    • MHR 310: Counseling Diverse Populations (3 credits)
      *recommended for students with a minor in Mental Health and Rehabilitation
    • PSY 214: Psychology of Prejudice (3 credits)

    Application Courses
    The following courses are required (15 credits):

    • PSY 201: Lifespan Development (3 credits)
    • PSY 212: Abnormal Psychology (3 credits)
    • PSY 230: Social Psychology (3 credits)
    • PSY 420: Learning and Memory (3 credits)
    • Any 3-credit ANT or SOC course at 300+

    In addition to completing 37-40 credits of the UMaine at Machias Core Requirements and 39 credits of the Core Courses, students will need to take 41-44 additional credits in order to meet the 120 credits required by the program.

    Students may choose to earn a minor (18-21 credits) and/or take electives to meet the 41-44 additional credits.
